Coal-bed methane (commonly called as methane gas) is composed of biogas and air. It is one of the main causes for mine explosion and for greenhouse effects, but also excellent energy. Sihe Coal-bed methane power plant, utilizing the coal-bed methane down Sihe well to generate electricity, is composed of 60 generator units of 1.8MW Caterpillar G3529C CMM, 12 waste heat boilers of 6t/h and 4 generator units of condensing turbine, and uses water heat exchanger of gas engine cylinder to retrieve part of the waste heat. Its putting into service brings multiple social effects in mine safety, clean energy utilization and environmental protection.

The annual output of the power plant is about 840 million kW•h,and the heat supply reaches 234000GJ per year, equal to 293000t coal. Down well gas consumption is 385 million m³ per year, equal to 179 million m³ net methane.

The project kicked off in August, 2006. After two-year's construction and testing, it synchronized to the grid in Mars, 2008, was put into service seven months later, and passed the final acceptance in February, 2009. With the installed capacity of 120MW, the plant is the largest Coal-bed Methane power plant in the world.
