On June 12, the fourth China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo with the theme of “China and Africa: Together Toward Modernization” took place in Changsha, Hunan. Chen Fan, a member of the Party Committee and Deputy General Manager of China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), participated in the expo on behalf of the company. During the expo, China National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNEEC) signed an EPC framework contract for the 1,200TPD waste-to-energy project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and a supervision contract for the 100MW solar PV project in Jwaneng, Botswana.
During an event for infrastructure cooperation and exchange between China and Africa on the afternoon of June 12, Yan Weihua, Deputy Party Secretary and General Manager of CNEEC, and Kalkidan, Managing Director of the Ethiopian owner, Covenant Engineering GmbH, signed an EPC framework contract for the 1,200TPD waste-to-energy project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The contract value is $120 million. Located in the urban area of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, the project can handle 1,200 tons of household waste a day. The annual processing capacity is approximately 400,000 tons. This is the second waste-to-energy project developed by CNEEC in Ethiopia, following the Reppie facility.
Also at the event, a supervision contract of the 100MW solar PV project in Jwaneng, Botswana was signed by Zhou Jingtian, General Manager of Scientech International, a CNEEC subsidiary, and Zhu Jieying, an owner representative of Zhongbo Green Energy Co., Ltd. With a total investment of about $80 million, this is so far the largest PV power plant in Botswana. Covering an area of 248.2 hectares, the project consists of a 100MW solar PV power plant, 132KV booster station, and 12km power transmission line. Upon completion, it will meet more than 10% of Botswana’s additional power demand and significantly increase the proportion of renewable energy in the country.
The contracts for the two projects were successfully signing, which will inject new vitality into China-Africa cooperation and indicate that more cooperative projects with mutual benefits and win-win results will be built in Africa. Yu Xiaohong, Vice President of China International Contractors Association (CHINCA), Chen Fan, General Manager of CMEC, and Jin Hui, Director of Operation and Management Department of CMEC, attended and witnessed the two signing ceremonies.
CNEEC has been deeply engaged in key regional markets in Africa for decades. By improving its technical strength, accumulating management experience, developing talent pools, strengthening localized management, and promoting Chinese standards globally, CNEEC has made continued efforts to forge core competitiveness and professional capabilities. The company has constantly expanded the scope of cooperation with African countries, developing service capabilities across the industry chain from energy infrastructure to people’s livelihood projects. With this, the company is contributing to the high-quality co-construction of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
This expo not only served as a window for project display, but also highlighted CNEEC’s strategic upgrading in the African market. From the “environmental protection + energy” integrated solution for Ethiopia’s waste-to-energy project to the “supervision + technology” output for Botswana’s solar PV project, CNEEC is deeply integrating Chinese solutions into Africa’s development needs through the approach of “technology empowerment and model innovation”.
